MathCounts Competition Details

The first of the MathCounts Competitions is this Saturday at DU. Here is the information that I have been sent today. Since MathCounts is no longer providing lunch, we (parents and coach) might want to figure out a away to bring the kids lunch after the team round. My first thought is getting take out from the Chipotle on Evans, but I'm open to other ideas. Please comment to this post with thoughts.

Students qualifying for states don't get announced until the end of the awards ceremony. Last year we had 5 qualify and hopefully we will have at least that many this year. The Countdown round is worth the time to watch so I would recommend spectating for both parents and students.

I would like to meet the kids on Asbury Ave by the parking garage across from the Ritchie center at 8:30.

COACHES and PARENTS

Your student(s) will be competing in the Metropolitan Denver MATHCOUNTS Competition on Saturday, February 12! This letter provides important information on the upcoming competition.

FOOD: WE WILL NOT BE PROVIDING LUNCH THIS YEAR. Due to the large number of participants, increased costs, dietary issues, and logistic issues, we unfortunately can no longer provide lunch to the competitors and coaches. Competitors and coaches are requested to bring their own lunch. Drink vending machines are available in the building. Several take-out restaurants are located near the University of Denver campus. However, these restaurants are several blocks from the competition site.

A morning snack will be served in the lobby area. Food is not to be taken into the auditorium. We request that students proceed through the snack line with their coach. We request that each person take only one drink and one snack item. These snack items will include muffins and similar items.

PARKING:

The parking lots near Sturm Hall are pay lots. Parking in these lots is limited. Very limited on-street parking may be available. For additional parking information, please refer to the University of Denver website.

The University RTD light rail station is about 2 to 3 blocks from Sturm Hall. For additional light rail information, visit the RTD website at http://www.rtd-denver.com/

Please also note and review the following:

1) The competition will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2011, in Sturm Hall on the University of Denver campus (same location as the 2010 competition).

2) No cell phones, pda’s, or similar electronic devices are allowed at the competition. Coaches will be required to collect all such devices for the duration of the competition. These devices can be returned to the students at the conclusion of the competition.

3) Participation certificates should be available at the end of the competition, but if not, will be mailed with the school results.

4) Each school can only bring the total number of competitors that are registered with the National organization.

5) You must designate the FOUR 6th, 7th, or 8th grade students who will comprise the school TEAM, (No changes to the team members will be allowed once the competition has started)

6) Students are to bring calculators (please refer to the competition rules for acceptable calculator types) and pencils. We will provide pencil sharpeners and scratch paper.

NOTE: The doors to the Sturm Hall will not open until 8:00 AM. Please ensure competitors and/or coaches do not arrive prior to this time. They will not have access to the building.

On Site Check-In Process

All schools must check-in at the Registration table. Please have the coach only check-in.

Coaches are to verify the school information provided on the registration. We will be printing the certificates the day before, so please make sure your school information is up to date.

Teams and coaches will wait in the lobby area until we are ready to have them enter the auditorium for their seating assignment.

The schedule (approximate) for the 2011 Metropolitan MATHCOUNTS competition is as follows:

The competition and awards program are typically over about 2:30 p.m.

School result packages will be available before the end of the awards program. They will include student and coach certificates and detailed school results.
